Basic Pay: £26,340 per annum (additional on-call and overtime payments)
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Donald McLaren Ltd is an independent family-run Funeral Directors and Monumental Sculptors. We are seeking a full-time Driver/ Funeral Service Operative to join our team.
You should have effective communication and interpersonal skills, be self-motivated, and have a flexible attitude to business needs with plenty of initiative to learn the procedures and quickly become a valuable member of a busy working team. A high degree of professionalism is essential for this role.
Requirements:
- Smart appearance and a professional demeanour.
- A clean UK driving licence held for at least 10 years.
- Willingness to participate in an on-call rota, including covering nights and weekends on a rotational basis for staff holidays and sickness.

As a Funeral Service Operative, you will deliver compassionate and practical assistance to the deceased and their loved ones in a respectful, dignified, and professional manner.

Responsibilities:
Your role will involve a wide range of duties, including but not limited to:
- Transporting the deceased from the place of death to rest in our funeral home with dignity and professionalism.
- Assisting with the preparation and dressing of the deceased, ensuring dignity, respect, and attention to detail.
- Furnishing coffins, engraving nameplates, and preparing grave markers.
- Driving and maintaining the fleet of prestige vehicles, ensuring they remain clean and presentable.
- Acting as a bearer and assisting in funeral services with professionalism and respect.
- Erecting headstones in cemeteries, adhering to health and safety protocols.
- Supporting Funeral Directors in delivering exceptional service to clients, exceeding expectations.
- Engaging with local communities and maintaining relationships with clergy, celebrants, cemetery, and crematorium staff as a trusted ambassador for Donald McLaren Ltd.
- Ensuring a clean, organised work environment and maintaining high standards of personal appearance and conduct.
- Complying with company policies and the National Association of Funeral Directors Code of Practice.
Requirements:
To be successful in this role, you will need to:
- Demonstrate flexibility, adaptability, and a commitment to delivering excellent client service.
- Be physically capable of performing tasks such as lifting and carrying heavy weights, in accordance with manual handling procedures.
- Have a clean UK driving licence for at least 10 years, with the ability to drive a range of vehicles (your licence will be checked annually).
- Be available for on-call duties as part of our 24-hour rota system.
- Understand and appreciate the importance of delivering a perfect final tribute for families, with meticulous attention to detail.
- Show reasonable numeracy and literacy skills and the ability to follow detailed instructions.
