Inscriptions

It can be hard to find the right words to express how you feel and what someone meant to you. It is important to consider future inscriptions and the space available on the memorial.

The following guide is intended to assist you create a traditional, flowing memorial inscription. These suggestions are for guidance only. Our Memorial Design Consultant will work with you to find the most fitting words to commemorate your loved one.

How Many Names are expected be on the stone?

This is a key consideration as it will determine the size of headstone you need. You should consider now who else will likely be interred in the same lair at a later date. To help you choose the right size of stone, our Memorial Design Consultant will provide you with a scale print out of your memorial with the inscription showing how much free space will be left on the stone.

Personal Details

Traditionally the details of those interred would be inscribed in chronological order. Typically the stone would mention the person’s name date of death and either their age or date of birth.  Below are 4 traditional layouts:

Endearment

Endearments are a short expression of love and affection which reflects the way each person will be remembered and who they were to your family. Common endearments include:

“Beloved Mother & Grandmother”

“Dearly loved Father
& Grandfather”

“Loving Son and Husband”

“A Much Loved Daughter,
Wife, & Friend”

Where there is more than 1 name on the headstone, endearments can be used to help the inscription flow by introducing the next name on the stone, for example:

Epitaph/Verse

An Epitaph or closing verse is traditionally used at the base of the plate to conclude the inscription.  Epitaphs take on many forms and are derived from many sources including famous quotes, song lyrics, literary excerpts and verses from biblical or other religious scripture.
